American lotus, Nelumbo lutea

American Lotus

One person's desirable species can be another person's invasive and undesirable species. The American lotus (Nelumbo lutea)  is a good example. Where I come from in Illinois, there are efforts underway to restore American lotus to lakes and waterways that have been so degraded by recreational activity and poor water quality that very few floating vegetation or fresh marsh plants can survive. This photo was taken at Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. At Mandalay, the lotus are a native but invasive and undesirable species in marsh habitat that has been altered significantly by human activity.
